Designing a booklet series.
As one of the projects for Typography II with Professor Ernesto Aparicio, we were tasked with highlighting 3 contemporary designers in typography. I chose to focus on the typefaces Bely, Marcia, and Montserrat, all designed by women.
Highlighting the type.
I chose to keep designs as simple as possible, as I really wanted to showcase the main functions of the type specimen. However, working with different levels of hierarchy and a grid, I was able to create dynamic spreads.
Montserrat ↗ by Julieta Ulanovsky
The old posters and signs in the traditional Montserrat neighborhood of Buenos Aires inspired Julieta Ulanovsky to design this typeface and rescue the beauty of urban typography that emerged in the first half of the 20th century. Ulanovsky began this project in late 2010 while she was a post-graduate student of typeface design.
Bely ↗ by Roxane Gataud
Bely is a serif typeface designed by Roxane Gataud and published through TypeTogether in 2016. The design features sharp, triangular serifs and open apertures. The family is available in two text weights with matching italics, as well as Bely Display, an exuberant display face that features a tilted axis with extreme contrast between thick and thin strokes.
Marcia ↗ by Victoria Rushton
Victoria Rushton started Marcia, her typeface, with the attitude of a letter. Its high-contrast roman echoes the Modern styles of the 19th century, while the sturdy italic provides a base for its decorative variations. Both roman and italic, with their unusual ornamental ligatures are filled with a spirit of lettering, but Marcia remains wholly typography.
